featured four keynote presentations to include: “Human Adaptive Mechatronics Interaction and Intelligence” presented by Prof. Fumio
Harashima of Tokyo Denki University; “Waves and locomotion control of
bio-inspired robots” presented by Prof. Luigi Fortuna of University of
Catania; “Fieldbus Technology and Industrial Automation” presented by
Prof. Jean-Pierre
Thomesse of Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine; and
“Distributed Data Security for Factory Automation” presented by Prof.
Alfred C. Weaver of Universty of Virgna.
The ETFA 2005 Technical Program was preceded by the Industry Day held on
September 19 organized by Prof. Salvatore Cavalieri of University of
Catania. The Industry day is a unique event to the ETFA and WFCS
conference series and intended to stimulate interaction between industry
and academia. The Industry Day
had a focus on the industrial communication technology aspects in
industrial and factory automation and featured presentations by Konnex
Association, iconcs, OpenTech EDV-Research GmbH, Siemens, Feldbus
Foundation, Schneider Electric, Wonderware, Woodhead, and ST
Microelectronics.
The tenth edition of the ETFA conference, which started in 1992, was an
occasion to acknowledge contributions of many people who made this event
such a success and the largest and most important IEEE Conference
dedicated to industrial automaton. Among those individuals, four
Honorary, General, and International
Advisory Committee Chairs, who particularly excelled in supporting the
ETFA Conference Series, were honored at the conference gala dinner. They
were Fumio Harashima, James C. Hung, J. David Irwin, and Alfred C.
Weaver.
Two best paper awards were presented at the gala dinner held in a
historic 16 century Palazzo del Toscano; The Fumio Harashima Best Paper
Award for Emerging Technologies went to the paper "Tracking Multiple
Moving Objects for Mobile Robotics Navigation" authored by Jorge
Almeida, Antonio Almeida, Rui Araujo; The James C. Hung Best Paper Award
for Factory Automaton went to the paper “Assessment of PROFBUS Networks
using a Fault injection Framework “ by José Augusto Carvalho, Adriano
Silva Carvalho, and Paulo José Portugal.
To appreciate better the beautiful city of Catania, the attendees
had a chance to participate in the Catania walking tour on the last day
evening. Certainly the place is beautiful. The conference was a must to
attend! Plan for the ETFA 2006 conference in Prague on September 20-22
2006.
